Moral Values in Some Selected Song Lyrics by Ariana Grande

Abstract

The aim of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the moral values and moral messages conveyed through some selected song lyrics by Ariana Grande. To achieve this, as many as two songs have been selected to represent each set moral values being studied accurately. For instance, "Truth" is represented by Fake Smile and In My Head, "Love" is represented by One Last Time and Into You, "Honesty" is represented by Needy and Ghostin, "Gratitude" is represented by Thank U, Next and Breathin, "Courage" is represented by God is a Woman and No Tears Left to Cry, "Freedom" is represented by Break Free and NASA, and "Trust" is represented by Off the Table and Safety Net. The writer refers to the theory by Landau (2018) and Buzan (2001) to identify the moral values in the song lyrics. The findings of this study are expected to help in the understanding of the moral messages and its impact on the listener's perception of morals. By analyzing these songs, the writer aims to better understand the moral values which are also prevalent in today's society and how they are conveyed to the public through popular music.
