Compound Words in M. L. Stedman’s Novel The Light Between Oceans

Abstract

This study discusses the compound words in the novel M. L. Stedman's novel The Light Between Oceans. It aims to investigate the types of compound words and forms of compound words found in the M. L. Stedman’s novel The Light Between Oceans. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative research. The data used in this research are types of compound words based on the theory proposed by Haspelmath (2002), and forms of compound words based on the theories of Adams (2001) and McCarthy (2001) from M. L Stedman's novel The Light Between Oceans based. The results show that there are four types of compound words found in this novel, namely endocentric compound words, exocentric compound words, affixed compound words, and appositional compound words. And the three forms of compound words found in the novel consist of noun compound words, adjective compound words, and verb compound words. The most dominant type of compound in the data is endocentric compound, while the most dominant form is noun compound.
